The Further Guide to Unretirement Planning
Our free guide will put you on the path to living your best life at midlife.
You’ve seen the headlines.
Generation X is in bad shape when it comes to retirement savings.
You’d think people our age are scared to death that they won’t be able to retire on time. But that’s far from our top concern.
The greatest fear people in their 50s and early 60s cite in Transamerica’s Retirement Survey is “outliving my savings and investments.” And this is a very real concern.
In fact, a 2024 survey from Allianz Life Insurance found that 63% of Americans worry more about running out of money than death. Given the dire consequences of poverty later in life, that’s understandable.
Even people with ample retirement savings are scared, which makes their “golden years” a time of constant worry instead of joy. Plus there’s the loss of meaning and purpose that many experience when they simply quit working.
Now we need to come up with at a different plan of action. What's the alternative to the traditional retirement myth?
Originally, the "unretirement" trend was a more literal concept. Baby Boomers who had already retired realized it wasn’t all they thought it would be, and went back to work.
I now use the term “unretirement planning” for people in their 50s who want to start living the life they want right now (or in the much nearer future).
Working a job that you find unfulfilling until you can retire at 67 seems like a ridiculous strategy, and it’s actually the least secure position you can be in. Plus, you need to have enough money to live 30 more years, which is tough for most anyone.

Wow, that is so sad that the number one concern is to run out of money during retirement ahead of death. 😢
